I know its pretty easy to just have a rant and give the NHS in general a kicking, but I'm going to try and not do that!!!!!!
So here's the good bit first, yes a good bit, the Paediatric Intensive Care Unit in Bristol is generally good, okay so they made a few mistakes but in the main they did everything they could.
And now the bad bit with some background........
My son was born in September and at first seemed fine, growing and feeding well at about 3 months oldwe took him to the GP as he seemed to have a chest infection, the GP tried to convince my wife that the problem was PND and that she needed help. We Finally got sent to our local NHS hospital (weston General) where we saw a paediatrician that diagnosed bronchilitis even though she couldnt hear his chest properly as he was crying, we did offer to try and stop him from crying so she could hear better and was told 'no its fine'.
We were then admitted to Bristol Childrens Hospital, spent 12 hours on a ward with a ventilator box on his head and then they decided to do a chest xray, this showed and enlarged heart, which then turned out to be VSD, Aortic Stenosis and Left Ventricle Dysfunction, he had heart surgery fairly quick and spent 7 weeks in intensive care, caught a few infections, had his lung punctured, ended up with blood clots, was given clot busting drugs and ended up with severe brain damage which eventually brought his short life to an end.
The Cardioligist at the childrens hospital gave us the impression that these problems should have been visible at the 20 week scan and had they have been seen then he could have been treated at birth and probably would still be alive and well now.
I complained to weston general hospital as i dont believe they did the scan correctly, after 9 weeks I had no response so had to threaten them with the press to get anything from them, and it appears they have not really done anything apart from try to cover it up and ignore me.
There is nowhere for people that have been mistreated by the health service in this country to go to, they all stick together and make sure that the untrained are generally treated like dirt.
My final word on this is, if you are pregnant or want a child and live in the south west, MOVE go somewhere where the hospital might care a little bit, I'm guessing this would involve moving to another country.
Rant over now, if anyone can give any advice as to what I should do now it would be much appreciated, oh and if your a NHS employee pleasedont reply sticking up for them, in doing that you are just confirming the we stick together mentality and sod the mistreated patients attitude of the NHS.
