Hi,

I just received this e-mail message:

Hi, you probably gathered my name is steve, well all i am is an impartial person of the nature of who we realy are, or at least thats how we are made to feel, I know the difference between wrong and right from what I was tought in school and from what I have lived in the way the so called organised governmental, mental being the operative word, have given me. its good to see that there is someone out there with the clever mind to negociate the internet to make other peoples voices heard and I take my hat off to anyone who could no less than try to make some kind of difference to our lives, thank you for introducing me to your forum and yes I tried to post, if it hasnt worked then I must have done something wrong, after your e mail, I posted, but I also added to it, with another little peice of my mind, if it isnt showing then Im sorry for not being all ther so to speak, but I have suffered three strokes and all i can do is my best, at least I tried, sorry again, and thank you, all the best

Steve's postings aren't showing, yet. So I sent him an e-mail reply with instructions on how to post a new thread, and a reply, on this forum. The procedure is pretty much the same on all forums on the internet.

After I sent my reply to Steve, I thought perhaps the instructions might be helpful to others, so here they are:

You have registered on the forum, and that's the most difficult part. But your posted messages don't seem to be showing.

Here's the process to follow --- it's fairly easy, and I'm glad to help in any way if you have any questions:

First of all, please go to the NHS Sucks forum itself at http://www.sucks.org.uk/forum/index.php (http://www.sucks.org.uk/forum/index.php)
You will need to log in using your user name -- mine is craigwalsh -- and your password. You enter this information on the upper right hand corner of the screen.
Click "Log In" You should then get a screen that says "Welcome (your user name)" and after a moment or two you'll be taken back to the forum itself. You can confirm that you're logged in by looking in the upper right-hand corner. It should show "Welcome (your user name)" in the upper right-hand corner.
That's the hard part.
Now just decide where you want to post. If you have a complaint against NHS Doctors, click on that link on the left. This will open up that section of the forum. There should now be buttons --- on the top and bottom of the other postings --- that say "New Thread." This is what you want to do: to add a new thread (or article) to this part of the forum.
When you click on "New Thread" you will come up with a page to enter the Title of your posting --- a bit like the subject on an e-mail message. And, below that, your posting itself.
You just type your posting in the big box. There are various controls at the top that allow you to use bold type, or left or right justification, or add images, etc. But you don't need to use any of these. You just type your posting in the box. (You can create your posting in your word processing software or e-mail software offline, and then cut-and-paste it into the forum.)
When you have finished entering your posting, you can either click "submit new thread" or "preview post." (These are below the big box in which you enter the message --- you may need to scroll down to see them.)
If you click "preview post," you will see your posting as it will appear to others --- but it won't be posted at that stage. You need to scroll down to "submit new thread."
Until you click "submit new thread" your posting will not be shown on the forum.
Once you click "submit new thread," your message will appear on the forum in 15 or so seconds. Congratulations!
You can add to your thread --- or any other thread --- by just clicking "post reply" at the bottom of the thread. The process is the same as entering a new thread: you can, if you want, preview before you post.
As I mentioned, if you have any problems with any of this procedure, please let me know and I'll be glad to help. As with anything in life, because I know how to do this it seems simple to me. But it can be quite confusing at first. Once you get the hang of it, you'll be comfortable posting on this forum, and on any other forum. I hope, therefore, that you won't give up. You're almost there. Honest!

If I can be of assistance in any way, please send me an e-mail (craig@nhs-sucks.com) or please send me a private message via this forum.

There have been many attempts by automated processes (called "bots") to register on this forum. They register --- and then post, or try to post, messages that are commercial in nature. And quite a few, I regret, are porn. It's the same sort of rubbish that arrives in virtually every e-mail in box every day, only it's in the form of an unwelcome posting on a forum, rather than an unwelcome message.

I delete these as fast as I can, but I don't sit at my computer 24/7 (feels like I do on some days, especially with my back pain). I have also learned that it's best to ban the offending user --- that prevents them from re-registering --- rather than simply deleting them.

Up until today, when you register on this forum (or many other forums) you're asked to re-type characters that are shown in a little box. These characters are usually in different colours, against a confusing background, and tilted at strange angles. This is to confuse the "bots" and their optical character recognition technology.

I tried to register on another, unrelated forum this morning. The characters were so difficult to read that I failed the "test" on three occasions before finally getting it right. It's funny how this stops real humans, but not the "bots."

The funny little letters, etc, are called CAPTCHA (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Captcha) --- in case you're ever on Mastermind. This stands for Completely Automated Public Turing test (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Turing_test) to tell Computers and Humans Apart.

This morning I have, I hope, improved the CAPTCHA technology used on this forum. Folks will now see four images and will be asked to identify the cat, balloon, etc. I hope that computerised "bots" are unable to tell the difference between a cat and a tree. I hope it will stop the "bots" and the work they create for me, and the porn and other rubbish that slips through before I have a chance to catch it and delete it.

As always, comments and suggestions are most welcome.
