Can anyone tell me where you go for support when making a complaint?

You can go to the Independent Complaints Advocacy Service (ICAS). There are more details on the Department of Health website (http://www.dh.gov.uk/en/Policyandguidance/Organisationpolicy/Complaintspolicy/NHScomplaintsprocedure/DH_4087428).

I used the POhWER office in Worcester --- they have quite an informative website (http://www.pohwer.net/how_we_can_help/independent.html). The lady went with me to a fairly ineffectual meeting with the NHS, with the doctor in charge of the GP out-of-hours service. The POhWER lady was very nice, but just sort of sat there. And the doctor promised that he would follow up on various things, but didn't. When I then called, I discovered he'd left the position.

I think the folks at ICAS would be excellent at helping you prepare a written complaint, and they would also be a good sounding board. Based upon my own very limited experience with them, I didn't find them to be particularly proactive.

Just do a Google search for ICAS and you should be able to find an office near you.

If you do use the ICAS service, please come back to this forum and let us know about your experience with ICAS.

I hope this is helpful.
